Find the Perfect Golf Grip for Your Swing
Golf grip tips are important for many reasons, but are not given much attention. New golfers unfortunately believe you can place your hands on the golf club in any position and then hit a drive down the middle of the fairway.
Almost all instructors say that over 90% of all mis-hits are due to a wrong grip on the club. With that being the case, how do you know what golf grip is right for your golf swing?
Like snowflakes no two golfers are built alike. All golfers are different, you will have your own individual golf grip.
How To Get Your Natural Golf Grip
To find your neutral golf grip you’ll want to stand up straight. Now simply let your arms and hands naturally hang down at your sides. Look down and see how many knuckles are visible on your target hand (the target hand is the left hand for right handed players). For most people it will be either two or three knuckles.
Now, grab any one of your golf clubs and take a golf grip with your target hand. As you place your golf grip, be sure you keep the same number of visible knuckles when your hands were hanging down at your sides. This is your neutral golf grip.
For many golfers this golf grip may feel bizarre at first. do not worry, it will become natural over time, but now you are trying to create the correct golf grip that squares up your club face at impact to hit straighter and longer shots.
Golf Grip Adjustments
Now with your neutral golf grip, let’s see if you need to make any adjustments. Where are the “V’s”, created by the forefinger and thumb of each hand, pointing as you take your golf grip and address position? Done correctly they should be pointing towards your nose and trail (right shoulder for right handed golfers) shoulder.
Are you gripping the club with your palms or fingers? The club should lie in your fingers and not the palm. When the club is gripped in the palm it creates incorrect grip positions.
Now you have your new golf grip. Now it’s time to go to the driving range and hit some real golf balls.
As you begin swinging, keep track of where the golf balls are flying. Are they slicing? Then adjust “Vs” more towards your trail shoulder. This will give you a stronger golf grip. Stronger relates to a position no how tight you hold the golf club.
Are they hooking? Then adjust “Vs” more towards your chin. This will become a weaker position compared to the neutral position.
Once you begin hitting straight shots you know you have the golf grip that is perfect for you. It will take a lot and practice, but it is fundamental that will remain with you forever.
