Golf Drills: Bunkers
Acceleration in Bunkers
A common problem golfers have in bunkers is having the clubhead stop in the sand during a bunker shot. This problem is caused by a deceleration in the golf swing. To properly splash a ball out of a bunker the sandwedge must still be accelerating through the sand. These two drill will encourage the golfer to keep the club accelerating through the sand.
Overlapping Grip
Set up in the bunker. Place your trail (bottom) hand on your target (top) hand. Now swing, without a golf ball, and splash the sand. If you decelerate the club will have a difficult time leaving the sand. Accelerating properly sand will land on the green and the golfer will natural follow through. Perform this drill with a golf ball.
One Handed Drill
Set up in the bunker. Now swing to the top of your backswing. Now release the grip of your trail (bottom) hand. Swing through to a full finish. It is best to learn this drill without the golf ball at first to gain the proper feel of the drill. Once you can comfortably splash sand onto the green introduce a golf ball into the drill. This drill is difficult but the benefits are great.
