Chick Evans

Chick Evans was one of the finest amateur players in the United States. Chick Evans played in the most US Amateurs of any golfer and holds the record for the most matches won, 57. He began his career in golf as a caddy in North Chicago at the Edgewater Golf Club.

He began playing in the US Amateur in 1907. He was a finalist 3 times and won the US Amateur in 1916. He played in his final US Amateur event in 1962.

In 1916 Chick Evans won the US Open and US Amateur. In doing so he became the first player to win these two tournaments in the same year; a feat only matched by Bobby Jones. His score of 286 stood as a scoring record at the US Open for 20 years.

Chick Evans also won the Western Amateur 8 times and also won the Western open, the French Amateur, and the North South Amateur.

He receives accolades regarding his golfing prowess from Gene Sarazen calling Chick Evans a “finer iron player than any of the professionals. From Bobby Jones as “one of the gamest and competitive golfers the world ever saw. And from Henry Cotton, “the greatest amateur golfer of is generation”.

Chick Evans established the Evans Scholarship Fund which rewards students that achieved high academic standards, are golf caddies, and prove financial need. Since 1930 the Scholarship fund has had 9,000 recipient graduated from post secondary schools.
