J.H. Taylor

J.H. Taylor is the third peron to win five British Open Championships. He was the first Englishman to win The Open Championship. J.H. Taylor became part of the the Great Triumvirate which also included Harry Vardon and James Braid.

J.H. Taylor began making a name for himself in challenge matches. These matches were very popular in this era of British Isle golf. Golfers would challenge another golfer to a match and they would play for a cash prize. Many of the players in the England and Scotland developed from palying in these challenge matches. After beating Andrew Kirkaldy, Kirkaldy was quoted as saying “You’ll see more of Taylor and then you’ll know why he beat me, and why he will beat all the best of the day.” And also “The mon’s a machine he can dae naething wrang.”

J.H. Taylor won his first Open Championship, at Sandwich, in 1894 by five stroke. He successful defended his throne at St. Andrews the next year and won by four strokes. In 1900, he won the Open Championship again at St. Andrews this time the margin of victory was 8 strokes over Harry Vadon. His forth victory was in 1909 at deal. His last came at Hoylake where he beat runner-up Ted Ray by 8 strokes. In four of his victories he won by four stroke or greater.

Like many great players J.H. Taylor was extremely competitive. Taylor was at his most competitive during major championships. Some beleive his drive for major championships rivaled Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. Even though his demenour on the outside was of a cool competitor the comptitive fire burned inside.

After retiring from competitive golf J.H. Henry wrote books including “Golf, My Life’s Work“, became a club maker and cource designer, and formed golf assoiations like the Brtish PGA, the Artisan Golfers Association and the Public Golf Courses Association.
