Golf Tips: Relax for Power

Tension is an enemy of the golf swing. Tension does not allow the muscle to perform fluid motion and it inhibits the range of motion in the muscle. Look at Ernie Els, he creates a lot of power with a seemingly effortless swing. By keeping his muscles relaxed he is able to make an athletic swing that creates a tremendous amount of power. Here are a few simple exercises that will help reduce tension:

  1. Loosen grip. The correct grip pressure allows the proper cocking and release of the golf club during the golf swing
  2. Shrug shoulders – This will relax the muscles in your shoulder and upper back and make a full turn easier. For the best example watch Freddie Couples during his pre shot routine.
  3. Flex the Knees – Don’t bend too much or have straight legs. Too much bend put stress on the quadriceps and restricts your body turn. Having straight legs does not promote an athletic stance or motion.
  4. Tense all muscles for a count of 5, then relax. This simple exercise helps release tension
  5. Stretch your muscle as often as possible
