What $4.99 or less? What golf swing aid can sell for that price. What golf company would sell such an amazing training aid at such a low price. That the point they don’t. They resigned and marketed the product as impact tape and raised the price. So for less than $4.99 you can but yourself a roll of masking tape.

Why use a piece of masking tape? After applying the tape to the club face hit a golf ball. The ball will leave a mark on the tape and you can instantly tell where you are making contact on the club face. But how will seeing where I make contact improve my swing? Knowing where on the club face you make contact can tell you many things about your golf swing.

Knowing that hitting the sweet spot is our goal when making contact with the golf ball we will use out reference points from the sweet spot.

You will be able to determine your path your golf club traveled. Shots that make contact closer to the toe tell me that the swing was swung on a outside-to-inside swing path. For shots closer to the heel the swing tendency is an inside-to-outside swing path.

Now if the marks are above or below where the sweet spot is will tell us our angle of approach tendency. If contact is made below the sweet spot your angle of approach is too shallow and if it is too low you will skull the ball. Marks above the sweet spot show us that the angle of approach is too steep which can result in fat shot or skied shots if swinging a driver/fairway metal.

Your goal, of course, is to hit the sweet spot when making solid contact. There is zero vibration and no twist of the club face when the ball is struck in the sweet spot. The degree in which the ball misses the sweet spot will influence the distance you hit the golf ball. A golf ball mis hit by a 1/4 inch will travel further than a ball mis hit by a 1/2 inch.The twisting of the club face will influence the direction the ball’s flight.

Tape is an important tool in custom fitting golf clubs. Club fitter will use tape to help determine two important factors in getting you fit into the right golf clubs. First they will place tape on the sole of the golf club and get you to hit ball off a board. This will show you where your sole bottoms out in the swing. If your clubs lie angle is too flat the marks will tend to be towards the toe. They also place tape on the face to determine the proper length of golf club. Marks towards the toe indicate to the club fitter that your clubs are too short and would suggest adding some length to the shaft.
