2008 Golf Season Recap

With Jack Frost visiting us a few times in the last couple of weeks I began to look at a post I published last year where I published my golfing goals for 2008. I have never really set any goals for golf season before let alone publish them. So it was interesting to see the goals I achieved and what I did not achieve.

My first goal was to play more often in 2008 than 2007. This was the goal I full achieved. In 2007 I played a total of 6 rounds. This year I played 14 full rounds and two 9 hole rounds with my wife who began playing this year (more accurately this fall). Scores were satisfactory. My wife and I took a vacation to Las Vegas during Easter and My first game was at Las Vegas National. I was very rusty off the tee and that hurt my score and was in the mid 80’s but followed that score up with a 74 the next day at Siena Golf Club. Most of my scores this year were in the mid-70’s.

My second goal was to play one shot at a time. This was probably the hardest goal I set for 2008. I could honestly say that I achieved this goal about two thirds of the time. When I did play one shot at a time I played very well. However it was the other third that caused my scores to be higher. It is amazing how thinking one or two holes ahead can affect your game and most important your score. Lose focus and your game suffers.

My last goal was to practice my short game more to improve my scrambling skills. Honestly I failed miserably and did not achieve this goal at all. Worst of all going over my stats this year my scrambling stats improved over the last season. I say worst of all because I do not want to reinforce a bad habit or procrastination.

Looking forward to next season I have not set any concrete goals yet. I hopefully have one more round to play, if weather permitting, this Sunday. Once the golf clubs have been hung up for the season then I will write down my goals.

Did you make any goals for this last year and to achieve or surpass any of them?

I set a few goals this year in golf and don’t think I reached one but I did have fun on the course even when shanking every other drive haha.

  2. November 11th, 2008 | 7:35 am

do you know where to have a golf course?
    thanks.

  3. November 11th, 2008 | 9:29 am

My focus was primarily on long putts and better lagging. It does help to have one or two specific goals at the start of each golf season.

  4. November 12th, 2008 | 9:37 am

My goal is also to play a lot more. My backyard is a golf course and I have found myself not golfing as much as I used to.

  5. November 13th, 2008 | 7:07 am

I had a goal this year to shoot an 89 or lower, but I didn’t make it. The lowest round was a 90. I injured myself halfway through the year so I wasn’t able to get a full chance, so I am re-establishing this goal for 2009.

I had a very similar goal. Last year I wanted to break 80. Unfortunately it didn’t happen but I don’t think I put enough effort into it.

I had a goal this year. This year i wanted to make my first hole in one. Unfortunately untill now i can’t make it.

I am still a rookie when it comes to golfing, so I can\’t even say I’ve come close to mid 70\’s ;) But I am shooting for low 80s by the end of next year.

  9. December 14th, 2008 | 7:12 am

This summer I played a lot more than usual, and I’d say by the end of the year it really helped. I was a lot more consistent.

I focused on rhythm and slowing down my swing and I’d say that made the most difference in finally getting down into the 80s again by the end of the season. Too bad the season is so short here in Canada.

Great to set goals I agree. I have a couole of players who have them written on a white board and one of them who had a lesson today say he achieved all but one. The white board stared himm in the face every night as he went to sleep in his dorm at University.

My goal was to play more courses here in beautiful Georgia. Unfortunately, I was working six days a week for most of the year, and couldn’t find the time to travel to far from my home.

You have more patience than me!
My only goal in golf is to enjoy it.

My goal is to really work on my hitting. I’ve been told I have a great form so I have the opportunity to be a good golfer, but I need to work on my hit and really the rules in general!

  14. January 7th, 2009 | 10:10 am

I too am hoping to get out and play more!

  15. January 10th, 2009 | 8:30 pm

I think you selected your goals well. Only a few goals and goals that were easily measurable and easy to reflect on.

    What about 2009? :-)

  18. January 13th, 2009 | 3:45 am

Thanks for the read. I think setting goals is always a good idea in life, and I try to set some for my golf game.

  19. January 31st, 2009 | 1:23 pm

Playing one hole at a time is big for me too. My mind is usually on other holes when I should be focusing in on the hole I am playing. I guess I’m just ADD b/c I cant do it.

Last week the weather here in Sacramento was sensational. I spent a few hours away from my home office enjoying the sun and practicing my “get out of the darn bunker” shots. With a few tips from a friend who joined me, I was able to make some progress! This week came the rain, so now I’m just dreamin’ of being back on the course.

  21. February 10th, 2009 | 1:21 pm

I always believe in setting goals, but that’s probably to do with my sad excuse for a memory. I’ve read a few books on personal development and it seems to be highly recommended by the professionals.

  22. February 12th, 2009 | 8:02 pm

I made a goal last year to get a handicap but I just didn’t get the time on the course. Another problem here (because of the drought) is that quite a number of courses are getting into poor shape. I find it difficult to play when the fairways aren’t quite as lushious as they should be :p

I wish I could accomplish my goals as well as you did. You deserve an award! I really need to devote more time to myself (and golf). Gotta break 85!

  24. March 4th, 2009 | 11:05 am

Just found your blog. Goal setting is so important in golf but I can never seem to stick to my plan. I wanted to play more in 2008 but we had a second child so I actually played less. I hope to break double digit rounds in 2009 and if I do I will be ecstatic! I used to play 6 days a week!

  25. March 7th, 2009 | 1:51 am

There is no substitute for practice so goal #1 is to get out there more. Then I’ll focus on my putting.

  26. March 13th, 2009 | 9:55 am

Why don`t you post any news anymore?

  27. March 15th, 2009 | 9:19 am

Nice posting ! I like to prioritize my goals. I analyzed what was costing me the most strokes and set my goals accordingly. My short game from 100-150 out is what puts me in the the hazards or rough a lot. And by praticing more with my striking irons from good and bad lies I was able to trim a little and add a little confidence… which i’m sure is 80% of this game anyway
    cheers

  28. March 17th, 2009 | 2:33 pm

My goal for last year was to play more golf than the year before. I have to say I actually accomplished this…by one round. Oh well, a victory is a victory

Goal setting, visualisation & mental attitude are essential for everything in life.
I teach a couple of golf enthusiasts Kung Fu who often comment on how much it has helped their performance mentally and physically.

Goals are one of those things that can be such a blessing or such a killer. They keep you working toward something on one hand, but if you miss them it is just awful. My goal for 2009 is to crack 10 handicap. If I keep telling myself I can do it I will.

To get out an play more, I keep telling my wife if she doesn’t give me a kitchen pass, I’ll be handicapped. :)

  33. April 2nd, 2009 | 11:52 am

Goals are a funny thing - they keep you working toward something but also are a killer if you miss them! I’m shooting to break a 10 handicap this year…

I wanted to play more games but failed due to an unrelated injury. Hopefully 2009 will be a far better year - it is so far :)

  37. April 23rd, 2009 | 12:28 pm

My goal was to stop rushing. I rush, then I slice my drives and chips waaay to the right, and I was ending up in the rough (or even right off the course!) too many times. I forced myself to take a few breaths before I even approach the ball, and at least 3 practice swings. Then I aim left :)

  38. April 28th, 2009 | 2:35 am

I am working hard to get my score under 88, but i am affraid i will never make it though

  39. May 1st, 2009 | 6:36 am

The literal definiton of golf is a game played on a large open course with 9 or 18 holes; the object is use as few strokes as possible in playing all the holes

I once read that the ~5% of people who write down and track their goals throughout their lifetime are more successful than the 95% who do not.

  45. June 22nd, 2009 | 1:24 am

This is a great way for your success. I am a beginner in golf, but I already have a great success. I am entered in the finals in my first tournament. Great start.

  48. June 24th, 2009 | 8:46 am

Great idea to set golfing goals for the year! For the casual golfer this can be as simple, like you said, as trying to play more than years past. For experienced golfers, however, setting goals can be an excellent opportunity to really evaluate your game, target weak spots, and work to eliminate them.

  49. June 26th, 2009 | 3:59 pm

I try to set 2 to 4 goals each you. Then the next year I set more goals. It keeps the game interesting.

I like to prioritize my goals. I analyzed what was costing me the most strokes and set my goals accordingly.

  51. August 6th, 2009 | 9:53 am

hmmm sadly i didn’t set goals as playing golf is more of a past time for me and my friends… maybe that’s also the reason we still play as bad as we do… but it’s tons of fun though!

  52. November 10th, 2009 | 4:22 am

I tried so hard to play good this year, but the harder I tried the worst I got. I’ve been playing for 15 years, sometime I felt like I was a beginner. I was so frustrated, the I just gave up and went up and swing away without caring. With that I started playing better. I realized that I was too tensed up. Once I relaxed, my swing was more fluid, and more on plane.

  53. December 21st, 2009 | 11:07 pm

my goal this year is to play 4-6 time a month

  54. February 1st, 2010 | 9:25 am

“I try to set 2 to 4 goals each you. Then the next year I set more goals. It keeps the game interesting.”
    ahahahha. good idea..
