2008 US Open Preview

With the [tag]Buick Invitational[/tag] starting later this week will this be a prelude to the [tag]2008 US Open[/tag]. Torrey Pines hosts the Buick Invitational each year and the South Course has been put on steroids recently to make it a suitable course for the US Open. Who will be the favorites going into this week and can they carry the momentum into June.

[tag]Tiger Woods[/tag]. His record at Torrey Pines is outstanding. He will be a three time defending champion at the Buick Invitational looking to win three in a row at this event. And he has also won here in 1999 and 2003. Tiger has also been runner up once in 2000. With 5 wins and one runner up since 1999 no has a better record at [tag]Torrey Pines[/tag] in this time frame.

[tag]Phil Mickelson[/tag]. Phil had back to back wins in 2000 and 2001. He beat Tiger, who was runner up, by 4 strokes in 2000. Another factor is Phil grew up in the San Diego area and will have a large fan base and of the top 5 players in the world will have the home field advantage.

Based on his runner up finishes in two of the last four Buick Invitationals [tag]Luke Donald[/tag] should be a favorite. However his play was not a strong as it should have been in 2007. Luke was runner up to [tag]John Daly[/tag] and Tiger Woods in 2004 and 2005.

[tag]Jose Maria Olazabal[/tag] won the Buick Invitational in 2002 and was runner up last year. His strong iron play suits Torrey Pines. To contend he must drive the ball well and have a sharp short game.

Last and not least is [tag]Charles Howell II[/tag]I. Last year he started out the year very strong and lost momentum as the year progressed. historically he has played well at Torrey Pines and has been runner up to Tiger at the event twice, 2005 and 2007. If his confidence has risen then watch out because he normally plays very well at Torrey Pines.

These predictions are based on past performance at Torrey Pines in recent years. Whether they have more confidence or the golf course suits their eye golfers historically play better at certain courses.

Who are your favorites to win the Buick Invitational and the [tag]US Open [/tag]in 2008?

Tiger Woods has been the best at Torrey Pines since he won in a Junior tournament at the age of fifteen. I think that a long ball hitter will win so that means Tiger, Phil, Vijay, or even Jim Furyk. Tiger has the bum knee, Phil can’t handle the pressure at the US Open, Furyk was runner up last year, and Vijay, well he’s consistent. So I’m picking Jim Furyk.
