Vijay Singh Wins FedEx Cup

With one event to go Vijay Singh will win the 2008 FedEx Cup. After the Deutsche Bank Championship Vijay had collected 120,500 FedEx Cup Playoff points. Since he is playing the BMW Championship the worst point total Vijay will finish with is 122,602, this is assuming a last place finish at The BMW Championship (2102 points) and not playing in The Tour Championship. If Vijay plays the Tour Championship and does withdraw or get disqualified he will gain at least 2000 points for a last place finish.

If Vijay decides not to play the Tour Championship only anyone who plays in the Tour Championship has an would have a chance of winning the FedEX Cup. However everyone below 14th place, after the first two events, needs to win the BMW and the Tour Championships to win the FedEx Cup. Those placed between 5 - 14 can win if they win the Tour Championship and finish 2nd at the BMW Championship. Players between places 5 - 10 need to win the BMW Championship and place 2nd and the Tour Championship. And those grouped places 2 - 4 at worst need to have one win and a 3rd place finish. As this is being written Camilo Villegas is currently in 1st place and Jim Furyk is tied for 2nd with 4 holes left to play in the BMW Championship.

Now if Vijay does play the Tour Championship only three players have a chance to beat him . They are Sergio Garcia, Mike Weir and Justin Leonard and they will need to win one of either the BMW Championship and Tour Championship and place 2nd in either tournament. At the BMW Championship Sergio Garcia is currently placed T20, Mike Weir T67, and Justin Leonard T16. Vijay Singh looks like he will finish T43 and get a projected 2156 points.

If Camilo ends up winning the BMW Championship, he leads by 2 with 3 holes to play, then chances are Vijay Signh will play the Tour Championship. By showing up and finishing the Tour Championship Vijay Singh will beat Camilo Villegas. As this is being written Jim Furyk is in fourth place at the BMW Championship with two holes to play. Furyk will need to win this event and the Tour Championship to win the FexEx Cup.

Even though it is not offical, at least not yet. I proclaim that Vijay Singh wins the 2008 FedEx Cup.

Update: The PGA Tour has posted the official points after the BMW Championship showing Vijay Singh with 122,651 and Camilo Villegas with 112,050. In the Tour Championship the last place finisher will earn 2000 points. This will give Vijay 124,651 if he finishes last. The winner will receive 12,500 point. If Camilo wins the Tour Championship he would still fall short of Vijay’s total, 124,651 versus 124,550.

Vijay is not a good winner for the PGA TOUR. He isn’t very friendly to the media and doesn’t open up very much. Too bad Camilo doesn’t have a shot at winning; would definitely attract more attention to the game.

It’s good to see Vijay playing well again. He’s really struggled over the last few years, but has really come on strong. He deserves to win.

It’s good to see Vijay playing well and having some success. The absence of Tiger this time around may finally give him a nice opening.

VJ is still one of the top golfers in the game, when Tiger gets back from his injury, i see VJ and the young guns giving Eldred a run for his money!

VJ has been at the top of his game for a few years now, with the young crow starting to come together i agree, i think tiger may have some competition and hopeufully lefty can get back into the mix along with david duval!

Its going to be up to the young players. I think the time has changed where the youngsters are going to give to experienced guys a run for their money!

Tiger will never have competition. With Tiger its not about someone beeting him its will he beat himself. Tiger has something that NO ONE in the game has.
